Editor's Note: The Beacon asked local bridge player Beth Brown to compile some thoughts about card playing, in advance of an upcoming course for beginners. Here is what she sent us.
Contract bridge is the hobby of tens of millions of people throughout the world, more so than any other card game.
In social circles, it is considered "the" card game. Whether you play casually among friends or seriously in clubs and tournaments, you will find it to be a fascinating challenging and enjoyable pastime.
In addition to beginners' classes starting Sept. 4 at Great Neck Library, the Friendly Bridge Club will host a class for intermediates and novices at 912 Fulton Court on Sept. 2. Want more? An annual bridge tournament is at the Cavalier Hotel this year, Nov. 3-10, sponsored by American Contract Bridge League and Local Unit 146.
You know you will be a potentially good bridge player if you:
- love numbers
- like to solve puzzles
- enjoy Sudoku
- always thought you would be a good detective
- like meeting people and making friends
- you sometimes glance over the bridge column in the newspaper and wonder, "What the heck is this all about?"
- are always up for a challenge.
Myths about the game of Bridge:
- Bridge is only for really smart people. Not true: Bridge can be learned by anyone. We are teaching bridge to local children in grades two through seven in our elementary schools.
- You need to bring your own partner. Not true. Bridge is a partnership game. However, you can be included as a single or a couple.
- The people who play bridge all seem old and "stuffy." Not true. Some of the happiest and most interesting people play bridge.
- You have to be a really good entertainer to invite people to your home to play bridge. Not true. Bridge players can survive hours on water and a handful of peanuts.
