Family pays reward for return of abused, stray pup

A Greenbrier family is rejoicing after they got their missing 3-month-old pit bull, Lola, back Tuesday.

The Barlow family adopted Lola about three weeks ago. When they did they brought a scared, abused creature into their midst.

"Her story is a sad one," Shelley Barlow said. "She was picked up as a stray and was dehydrated and malnourished, and her ears were bloody and infected from having been cut off in an inhumane and brutal act."

Lola was microchipped and spayed at the Chesapeake Humane Society's clinic at North Battlefield Boulevard. Then the brindle-colored pup was purloined last Friday from a party attended by Shelley Barlow's 18-year-old son Camron.

"Around midnight Camron noticed she was gone," Shelley Barlow recalled. " Camron looked for her into the night. The next day, the whole family got together to look for her in the neighborhood." "

She contacted Donna Servidio, her next-door neighbor who volunteers for the Chesapeake Humane Society.

"When we heard she was lost, we were devastated," Servidio said about her and the Humane Society staff and volunteers.

The family was so desperate to get their four-legged family member back they offered a $2,500 reward.

"We suspected someone from the party took her, and we thought that reward would help bring her back," Shelley Barlow said.

Finally, one of the party-goers who knew who dog-napped Lola, contacted the Barlows.

A meeting was arranged and the drop-off was made at Greenbrier Mall. The family paid out $800.

"I feel like it's Christmas morning," Shelley Barlow said.
