Once-Tropical Storm Fay’s last gasp will play out over the next few days, with on-again, off-again showers likely, said the National Weather Service in Wakefield.
There’s a 50 to 60 percent chance of rain today and Friday, said Weather Service meteorologist Keith Lynch. He predicts 1 to 2 inches of precipitation.
Chances of rain diminish over the weekend, Lynch said. As the weekend approaches, he said, temperatures will climb again.
A high-pressure system and cloud cover combined Wednesday for autumnlike weather, with temperatures in the 70s. Until the weekend, Lynch said, high temperatures will remain in the low 80s.
Lynch said Tropical Storm Gustav, off the coast of Haiti on Wednesday evening, is too far away for meteorologists to accurately forecast. He said current models have the storm heading toward New Orleans.
He said the tropical storm could reach hurricane status again as it picks up strength over the ocean.
The risk of rip currents continues to be moderate at beaches from the Eastern Shore to the Outer Banks, according to the weather service. A small craft advisory also was issued.
Air quality in Hampton Roads is expected to be good today, according to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
