Before his decision to get fit, Victor Bakkar's long work hours as a medical sales consultant drove him to find comfort in food. He wanted to improve his health and be a better role model for his family, so he hooked up with a personal trainer. Bakkar, 37, made time in his schedule to exercise, and he made a commitment to eat healthy.
Not only did his health improve, so did his family life and work.
What was your breaking point?
I reached my breaking point when my 4-year-old son was shaking my belly and telling me, "Daddy, your belly is big." I realized that not only was I hurting my health, but I was setting a bad example for my children.
What was your physical condition at the time, and what were your goals?
At 37, I reached my peak weight of 293 pounds. I had mild sleep apnea, high cholesterol and increased doctor visits for anxiety, stress, allergies and joint pain. I like to call it the road to self destruction. My life revolved around comfort food.
How did you achieve your goal?
My partnership with personal trainer Jim White started with an overhaul of our kitchen pantry. Then it was off to the grocery store to learn how to shop and eat healthy for the whole family. A blueprint was laid out for three days of strength training and six days of cardio for 45 minutes or more. I was given guidance on food choices at every session. During my training I never once saw myself on a diet. I was eating more often in healthier portions and choices.
I reached 214 pounds in less than nine months. All my previous health issues are gone.
What did you learn about yourself along the way?
I was always looking for ways to improve. I was looking for ways to be more productive at work. I was learning how to be a better father and husband.
At the end of the day, I have impacted my family in measurable ways. I have excelled to the top of my company. I have made time for myself to work and play hard.
What motivates you now?
I love the way my body looks and feels. I am working on sculpting my new, healthy body. It motivates me to watch my children exercise and want to eat healthier foods. My motivation is living the life I have created.
Your best advice for others?
There is no magic pill or new fad diet out there. I made a commitment to myself at the beginning to achieve my goal. I unleashed all my effort and dedication to getting there as fast as I could. It helped to see the pounds coming off, and there is no greater reward than to see the final result.
If you get a personal trainer, do not make the mistake of thinking they will do all the work. They are a tool to your success.
It takes 110 percent commitment to dedicate yourself to achieving your goals.
