Showers and storms possible today with highs in upper 70s

Parched lawns may get a much-needed drink today with a chance of showers and storms continuing through the rest of the week, the National Weather Service says.

Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70s today with a 60 percent chance of showers before noon and a possible thunderstorm this afternoon, the weather service says.

Showers could continue through tonight with the chance of showers decreasing to 50 percent tomorrow, according to the forecast on the weather service Web site.

A small craft advisory was issued for coastal waters from the Cape Charles Light to the Virginia border with North Carolina, the weather service says.

A warning also was issued for swimmers and surfers because of a moderate risk for rip currents.

Air quality in Hampton Roads today should be good, according to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
