A vacant lot overlooking the Lafayette River at the foot of the Granby Street Bridge is now the site of Tanner's Landing at Riverview, a luxury waterfront condominium in Norfolk.
When developer Tony Collins shared his desire to build the condominum development near the Riverview historic district, he promised the community it would be somewhere he'd live himself. And he does.
The president of Axis Development Co. LLC and his wife, Emily, live in the penthouse unit. Collins moved from a Ghent townhome to Tanner's Landing because he wanted low-maintenance living and waterfront docks.
Built by MEB Inc., Tanner's Landing was completed in July 2007. Nine of the 27 garden-style condominiums are currently owned. The three-story building features nine floors with two- or three-bedroom units ranging from 1,596 to 2,688 square feet.
The community features secured, covered, assigned parking, keyless tele-entry system, security system with 24-hour video surveillance, storage units, balconies, trash chute and 10 deeded boat slips accommodating 20- to 50-foot boats. Hardwood floors, granite counter tops, ceramic tile, crown molding, recessed lighting, gas log fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs are all standard.
"Tanner's Landing is for people who love activities in Norfolk but don't want to give up space," William E. Wood and Associates agent Dora Lee Taylor said.
That's what led Eric Boykin to purchase a two-bedroom, two-bath condominium in Tanner's Landing. Raised in a single-family home in Portsmouth, Boykin wanted to maintain the same feel and improve his commute to Norfolk Naval Base.
"This is a touch of urban living in a spacious unit, with a wide-open layout that's relaxing by the water," he said.
Dr. Molly Smith, 35, lived in an old Cleveland, Ohio, church that had been converted into condominiums before she relocated last year to a three-bedroom, 2-1/2-bath unit with a waterfront view at Tanner's Landing.
"I knew I wanted new construction. When I looked online at the floor plans at Tanner's Landing, I fell in love with them. It's just beautiful here," she said.
