NAIROBI, Kenya
Police in Kenya have charged a Virginia man with possessing 4.4 pounds of cocaine, saying he is part of a drug syndicate that operates in East Africa and Italy.
Police say they arrested 32-year-old Timy Hakim of Suffolk, Va., late Sunday while he was waiting to board a flight to Italy, going via Ethiopia. Hakim pleaded not guilty to the charge in court on Monday.
Hakim faces a possible life sentence and a fine of $328,571 if convicted.
Kenya serves as a transit point for people dealing in drugs such as mandrax, marijuana and, more recently, cocaine.
