With about one third of the Navy’s ships and one fourth of its sailors and aircraft based in Hampton Roads, the defense industry remains a major driver of the region’s economic engine.

John Skirven, chief executive officer of Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia, portrays the 170,000 people over 60 in Hampton Roads as being engaged in civic activities, volunteer opportunities and the working world.
